Corona crisis: merkel defends restrictions on fundamental rights

Chancellor defends restrictions on fundamental rights in corona crisis: angela merkel has once again called the curtailment of fundamental rights in the corona crisis an "imposition" on democracy – but at the same time defended the measures.

The CDU politician said in her speech on saturday (23 september).05.2020) published weekly podcast on the constitution day on 23. May, she could understand concerns of burgers in view of pandemic restrictions. The government is not taking the easy way out with the restrictions on fundamental rights. "That’s why they should be as short as possible. But they were necessary, and we have justified this time and again because we feel responsible to the people, as stated in article 1 of our basic law."

Merkel: "must balance the compatibility of measures against each other"

Part of this was to prevent the health system from being overburdened, and fortunately this was achieved, merkel said. "But of course, now with the loosening of restrictions, we are always obliged to justify why we are not yet lifting something and why we can already loosen something. And in this way, of course, we must also constantly weigh up the compatibility of measures against each other."That’s why she is glad that the current infection situation makes it possible to allow and make possible again many things that had been restricted for a few weeks.

Merkel went on to say that the corona pandemic poses special challenges for society, perhaps the greatest in 71 years. It is all the more important to respect the principles of the basic law. On 23. May 1949 the constitution was passed.

In numerous german cities, demonstrations were again planned on saturday against the governmental restrictions to contain the corona pandemic. Thousands of people had already demonstrated against the corona policy and encroachments on fundamental rights over the past few weekends. But there were also counter-protests against conspiracy theorists or against "right-wing agitation.

Must we endure the corona protests as a democratic country?? One must. But you don’t have to approve of them just because of that. On the contrary: our author robert wagner thinks she is hypocritical and dangerous.
